ROLE REQUIREMENTS

The candidate selection process includes minimum expectations which are required prior to any person being designated as a Maritime Security Team Member. Below stipulates the minimum expectations required to become a GMD Team leader, Team 2iC, Team medic and Team member. Minimum expectations include:

Team Member Minimum Expectations

The following describes the minimum requirements necessary for a designated candidate to become a typical Team Member:

• Must be a South African Citizen
• Must be 22 – 50 years old
• South African passport with at least 2 years validity remaining
• South African identity document
• Four years minimum Special Forces/Parachute Battalion/Police Special Task Force service or Four years minimum PSD experience in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen or Africa
• Military/police service discharge papers and service record (if applicable)
• Accredited CPO / PSD qualification (if applicable)
• Clean criminal record background check
• Licensed/registered member under PSIRA (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• Minimum C-Grade PSIRA certificate (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• SAPS licence to possess a firearm certificate (SAPS 524)
• In-date business firearms competency certificate for self-loading rifle or carbine (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• In-date business firearms competency certificate for manually operated rifle or carbine (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Personal Survival Techniques (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Elementary First Aid (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Ship Security Officer (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• No drug or alcohol addiction(s)
• Good physical and mental health
• Seafarers Medical Certificate (ENG1) or equivalent (GMD can assist in obtaining this document)
• Good level of spoken and written English
• In-date yellow fever vaccination card (GMD can assist in obtaining this document)
• Seaman’s discharge book (GMD can assist in obtaining this document)

Team Second in Command Minimum Expectations

In addition to the Team Member’s Minimum Expectations mentioned above, the following additional requirements are necessary for candidates to become a typical Team Second in Command:
• Served as an officer or as a non-commissioned officer in the military or police
• Minimum A-Grade PSIRA license (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• Proof of experience of at least 5 voyages as a security team member
• Exemplary evaluation records about his professional and social behaviour as a team member and second in command during previous missions

Team Leader Minimum Expectations

In addition to the Team Member’s Minimum Expectations mentioned above, the following additional requirements are necessary for candidates to become a typical Team Leader:
• Served as an officer or as a non-commissioned officer in the military or police
• Minimum A-Grade PSIRA license (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• Proof of experience of at least 8 voyages (5 as a security team member and 3 voyages as a second in command)
• Exemplary evaluation records about his professional and social behaviour as a team member and second in command during previous missions

Team Medic Minimum Expectations

In addition to the Team Member’s Minimum Expectations mentioned above, the following additional requirements are necessary for candidates to become a typical Team Medic:
• South African National Defence Forces Combat Medic (OECO) or,
• Minimum FPOS Intermediate or FREC level 3 medical qualification (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
