ROLE REQUIREMENTS
The candidate selection process includes minimum expectations which are required prior to any person being designated as a Passenger Vessel Security Crew Member. Below stipulates the minimum expectations required to become a Security Officer and Security Guard/Deck Hand. Minimum expectations include:
Security Guard Minimum Expectations
The following describes the minimum requirements necessary for a designated candidate to become a typical Security Guard/Deck Hand:
• Must be a South African Citizen
• Must be 22 – 35 years old
• South African passport with at least 2 years validity remaining
• South African identity document
• Two years minimum military/police service or two years minimum private security experience in the aviation or hotel sectors
• Military/police service discharge papers and service record (if applicable)
• Clean criminal record background check
• Licensed/registered member under PSIRA (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• Minimum C-Grade PSIRA certificate (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Personal Survival Techniques (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Elementary First Aid (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Designated Security Duties (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Crowd Management and Passenger Safety (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Crisis Management and Human Behaviour (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• No drug or alcohol addiction(s)
• Good physical and mental health
• Seafarers Medical Certificate (ENG1) or equivalent (GMD can assist in obtaining this document)
• Good level of spoken and written English
• Seaman’s discharge book (GMD can assist in obtaining this document)
Security Officer Minimum Expectations
In addition to the Security Guard/Deck Hand Minimum Expectations mentioned above, the following additional requirements are necessary for
candidates to become a typical Security Officer:
• Must be 22 – 50 years old
• Served as an officer or as a non-commissioned officer in the military or police
• Minimum A-Grade PSIRA license (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• STCW Ship Security Officer (GMD can assist in obtaining this qualification)
• Previous experience regarding incident investigation
• Computer literacy
